Young Sport Horses: Fashion, Riding and Training
Hello, I’m Kim Pickel, a dedicated rider specializing in sport horses for dressage and show jumping. I feel incredibly fortunate to spend six months of the year in Reno, Nevada, while the rest of my time is dedicated to training and honing my skills in Europe, with the aim of better serving the equestrian market in the United States.
My journey in the equestrian world began in 2008 when I started as a working student and rider on the UNR Equestrian Team. Throughout my university years, I continued to work and ride under the guidance of Sue Leep at Franktown Meadows Equestrian Center. During this time, I also had the privilege of serving as the captain and president of the equestrian team, further deepening my passion for the sport.
After graduating, I embarked on a winter season in 2014 at HITS in Thermal, where I worked with a private client. The following year, in 2015, I ventured to Wellington, Florida, where I worked as a groom and rider. Following the Wellington season, I had the opportunity to interview at Gestüt Lewitz in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, and subsequently accepted a position as a groom and rider there.
My time in Germany has been invaluable, as it provided me with extensive experience in riding and developing young horses, from their early stages under saddle to navigating jumping courses. I focused on establishing a solid foundation in proper dressage, ensuring they became well-rounded and reliable equine partners. This experience also allowed me to encounter and successfully resolve various common training issues. I have gained a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and qualities of notable bloodlines such as Chacco Blue, Balou du Rouet, Stakkatol, Polydor, Vivant, Coronet de Lys, Chaccon Blue, Chacfly, Diarado, Nabab De Rêve, and many more.
In 2019, I began competing young horses in the Netherlands, introducing them to their first shows and training events. I focused on developing their dressage flatwork to enhance their jumping abilities, emphasizing rideability, responsiveness, relaxation, and focus. It was during this time that I also began scouting horses for both the US and international markets.
My philosophy in horse development revolves around instilling confidence and understanding in our equine partners, ensuring a harmonious relationship between horse and rider. I believe that when both horse and rider can fully enjoy and trust each other, the true magic of equestrianism unfolds.
I am dedicated to continuously expanding my knowledge and skills to provide the best possible support to the equestrian community. It is my passion to help riders and horses thrive and reach their full potential in the world of sport horses.
